Sad news! I had a lot of chats with Frans some 6 or 8 years ago, but life ended up getting in the way and we've gradually lost contact. But he impressed me as good guy all around, with lots of dreams and energy.

Oh dang, this is really sad news indeed!

I would occasionally get his emails about something related to technology. Then we'll exchange a few emails on the topic and then he'll disappear again. I'll truly miss those sporadic and deep conversations.

He was a very good hearted soul helping underprivileged kids in Indonesia. The world needed more people like him, not less.

RIP Frans!

Hi everyone,

We are planning a second 'Get ready for Java 9 Hack Day' on Saturday, 19
August.
This is a joint session broadcast between the Virtual JUG, and the
Atlanta Java User Group, live from Atlanta.

You are welcome to join us in person, or online with the Virtual JUG, or
participate via your JUG - please make them aware about this meetup. We
are also looking for some JUGs who want to participate with in the live
steam with us remotely for this session.

Please contact me if you want to organize to participate jointly with us
in the broadcast live session.

Abstract:

August 19, 10AM - 4PM. Lunch at 12-1PM Eastern Daylight time (live from
Atlanta!)

You can take part in Java technology evolution through the Java
Community Process (JCP) program. You can participate in this session on
your own as an individual, through your employer, or as part of a
nonprofit such as a Java User Group (JUG). Currently there are JSRs
being finalized for the Java EE 8 and Java SE 9 platforms.

In this session we will be doing a hack day as part of the global Adopt
OpenJDK program getting ready for the release of Java SE 9. We kicked
off a testing program in 2016 and now it is really the time to be
getting ready the release of Java 9 coming in July 2017. This is a hack
day as part of the ongoing global adoption and outreach effort.
<http://openjdk.java.net/groups/adoption/>

We will be holding an all day hands on hack session covering the new
modules system in Java 9, the JLink tool which allows you to create Java
images with your application, and also how to migrate to the new Java 9
modular system with an older application. A laptop is required. Bring
your project and run it on Java 9 EA with fellow JUG members!

Download the latest EA build of JDK 9 to follow along:
http://jdk.java.net/9// <https://jdk9.java.net/download/>.

Speakers:
Heather VanCura is the Chair of the Java Community Process (JCP) Program

days (aka Hackergartens) around the world and Spec Lead of JSR 364,

passionate about growing Java technology and community building dynamics.

Mani Sarkar is a passionate developer mainly in the Java/JVM space,
currently living and working in the UK, as a Software Craftsman at
Codurance. A member of the London Java Community (LJC), JCP Member,
OpenJDK contributor (has been heavily involved with this project in the
past), involved in number of developer communities, and F/OSS projects.
He sees himself working in the areas of core Java, JVM, JDK, Hotspot,
Nashorn and Performance Tuning. Advocate of a number of agile and
software craftsmanship practices and a regular at many talks,
conferences and hands-on-workshops. Expresses his thoughts often via
blog posts, tweets and other forms of social media.

Simon Maple is the Director of Developer Relations at ZeroTurnaround, a
Java Champion since 2014, JavaOne Rockstar speaker in 2014, Duke's
Choice award winner, Virtual JUG founder and organiser, London Java
Community co-leader and RebelLabs author. He is an experienced speaker,
having presented at JavaOne, JavaZone, Jfokus, DevoxxUK, DevoxxFR,
JavaZone, JMaghreb and many more including many JUG tours. His passion
is around user groups and communities. When not traveling, Simon enjoys
spending quality time with his family, cooking and eating great food.

More details will follow as get closer to the date. Let us know if you
have questions in the meantime, and if you want your JUG to participate
with us in the live stream -
reserve a room and arrange a meeting with your local JUG and we will add
you to the live session.

We are taking the USA Tour Online!

Bruno Souza

Hi All,

As many of you followed, we run a Tour around several cities in the US a few weeks ago.

We want to extend the content from the tour to all JUGs, specially the ones in the US and similar time zones.

To do that, we are repeating all the presentations ONLINE -- and LIVE!

Next week (yes, the only time we were able to get everyone together) we will repeat all presentations, but this time they will be online. We put together a schedule, with one presentation a day, in US Central time zone, to make it as easy as possible for more people to participate.

If the timezone works for your JUG, and you can help us promote to your members, bellow is a sample email that you can use. Feel free to use it if it helps!

Bruno.

Hi!

The USA Java Tour continues, but now ONLINE!

Several speakers traveled the US, but they could not visit all JUGs that wanted... So, we are working together with the USA Java Tour Speakers to bring that content to our members, but this time online, in a series of live presentations:

See presentations about Java 9, NoSQL, Cloud, Web development, Containers and the Developer Career. From the comfort of your computer. Interact live with the speakers. Get answers to your questions.

The USA Java Tour was a crazy and fun trip, and now we will also have access to the great content of the tour!

The presentations will happen all week from next Monday (June 27) to Saturday (July 1st), in US Central time zone. The full schedule and registration page is here:

Hope to see you there!

Hi JUG Leaders,

Just to welcome you to the new JUGs Leader List.

Since Java.net is gone, this is now our new channel.

Please take a minute to chance your address book, so you don't miss messages
that end up on spam, nor you send messages to the old list!

Cheers!
Bruno.

Hi all,

As you know, Java.net is gone, and we needed a new place for the JUG Leaders
discussions. We made several tests, with different providers, and groups.io is by
far our best option.

So, I'm adding all JUG leaders to the JUGs Group.
That means: YOU have been added right now :-)
